Plan ahead~

2012 has already proven to big a busy and eventful one for us here are Maxie B's! Over the decade, we have happily been able to fulfill almost all cake requests from our customers…from birthdays to weddings, regardless of the amount of notice we had to work on the cake. As our business has grown, we are realizing that we do have some limitations as far as how many cakes can can make for the week…both from a space perspective in our shop and as far as how many cakes our girls can bake and decorate. As a result, we are seeing dates book up often and quickly, especially for holidays and popular wedding weekends. We also need to have a week’s notice for custom decorated cakes.

Ideally, a one week to 10 day advance notice on all custom-decorated cake orders and 8-12 months notice on wedding cakes (May, June, and October, especially!) is needed. Please know that we are both stressed and sad when we have to tell our customers that we cannot make their cakes! However, most importantly we want to guarantee that the quality of what we do for each and every order is what we are known for! This means that we must set a limit of how many orders that can realistically happen on one day.

If you have an event coming up that you know you are going to want a cake for, PLEASE come on in and see us about it! It is never too early to place an order. If you place a deposit to reserve your cake, but have to later cancel, that is fine. We will let you use your deposit toward another cake order with us. We do schedule appointments seven days a week to discuss custom cakes, so let us know what we can do to help you with that special cake order this year. The BEST times to schedule appointments with us are Monday-Friday from 9am to noon….as the shop is quiet and peaceful then. However, we will be happy to chat with you whenever you are in. A warning…weekends are the busiest times for us in the cafe. If at all possible, try to visit us for custom cake orders during the week!

Another great way to get help with custom cake orders is by way of email! If you will kindly include your telephone number with your email, we will have that in case we need to try and reach you by phone to chat about your message.

That said, we are ALWAYS able to help with last-minute dessert needs by way of our classic 9” round Southern Layer cakes! We try to keep all of our flavors available daily…so just drop by or give us a call to reserve yours when you need dessert!

Growing up Maxie B's style!

It has been quite a while since my last blog...

The bakery has been so busy since the start of the new year, keeping life a bit hectic within these walls. I wanted to kick start the blog again with a feature on a veteran Maxie B's customer. Madeline has been a supporter of ours since birth with her mom being a true Maxie B's fan. We have done so many cakes for the Brown family over the last several years and each year we are thankful to be able to create a fun birthday cake for Miss Madeline.

This year she turned 6 and had a Cosmic Bowling party with all of her friends. We made this funky and cosmic cake for her party and oh, how she loved it!

As I sit and think back to all of the amazing things that happened here in the shop over the last year, I can't believe that the year has passed and the bakery is another year older. This whole bakery thing just kind of happened and every year we are more and more grateful that Maxie B's was able to be a part of so many lives here in the area.

A yogurt shop, turned scratch bakery....who would have imagined. Robin Davis has done such a wonderful job creating a business that has grown and will continue to grow....we all at the shop are so thankful for you! {**cupcake kisses**} She has designed this place for all of us gals to come, be with friends, be productive and be proud of what we do every day. Robin has allowed many of us to grow up here in the shop regardless if it is a first job, a career in the making or a way of life; we all love her so much~

Throughout this last year we have been a part of two issues of Southern Living Magazine, made over 225 wedding cakes for happy brides and grooms, been a part of so many birthday parties, made dessert for lots of Christmas dinners, had a hand in a couple of marriage proposals, announced the much anticipated sex of several pregnancies with a specially filled cake hiding either a blue or pink layer inside (so fun!), welcomed Maxine...our little mascot....into the bakery world, added a couple of new babies to the Maxie B's family (welcome Gracie and Shelby), enjoyed time together together in the shop with our traditional pot lucks for celebration and experienced lots more than can be noted. We are truly a family here at Maxie B's and we thank all of our customers for being a part of the magic, too!

Without the orders for the Yoda Cakes...the simple Coconut Cake for Sunday brunch...the special birthday cake for that 1st birthday party...we just wouldn't be where we are without the customers! Thank you for allowing us to do what we do, and thanks so much for loving it! 2011 was our most successful year of business of our the 26 years Robin has had the shop...and 2012 will be even better.

So here's to 2012! We hope this will be a great year and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the Triad and those all around.

We work with so many fabulous people in the Triad on each event we do. From photography, to planners, to catering....we have created great relationships over the years.

When we arrive at each wedding to set up, it is not just a delivery, it is also a chance to catch up with old friends and share the love for what we all do.

Maxie B's Holiday Open House 2011

If you were in the shop with us Tuesday night, you know what a success our Holiday Open House was this year. We had lots of people in the shop, lots of desserts were baked and then devoured...and lots of laughs were shared with everyone who loves Maxie B's.

I put together a short little video of some photos that were taken during all of the action. There are cakes being created, cookies being baked, cupcakes being decorated and just a good time being had by all. We always enjoy opening up the bakery for all to see....it is even more fun when you get to come in and play along with us.

We had a bit of a break this past weekend, having only one wedding cake on order. A big change from the normal schedule for weddings here in the shop recently, but we embraced it and a gorgeous cake was created!

This wedding was at The Empire Room in downtown Greensboro on December 3 for Mr. & Mrs. McDonald. Julie and Chad asked us to design a cake that would be elegant, tasty and a showpiece for their reception. I think we achieved that!

Elizabeth Volinski worked on this little lady adorning her outer covering with fondant trim on each tier, handmade pearls that shimmered and cake inside that was out of this world.

Each piece of fondant was tinted, cut and placed by hand by Elizabeth along with a plethora of pearls...and by the end of it all, over 4 hours went into getting this finished product.

You can't tell from the pictures, but these guys chose our signature Red Velvet Cake along with Italian Cream Cake for their guests to enjoy. With the entire cake being iced in a Cream Cheese Icing, you just can't go wrong~

Victory Junction Holiday Gala

This past Saturday we were out at Audamont Farm in Trinity setting up a very festive cake for a benefit to raise money for Victory Junction. There was lots to be seen on the farm...from guitars to race cars to cake, of course!

As guests entered the barn, they were treated like a celebrity with the red carpet rolled out and ready.

The decorations were sure to put everyone in the holiday mood....what a beautiful job they did with it all!

As the night went on, there was an auction that included items from the Winston Open, Jimmy Buffet's own personal guitar and a showcase of things in the Petty Museum. Raising money for a great cause~

Now, for what you were all waiting for....the amazing cake that was created by our talented decorators,

Elizabeth Volinski and Olivia Allen!

A town was created from fondant with all lights on in the houses...waiting for Santa to drop in.

The topper on this cake was a star burst on wires with fondant reindeer flying into the night.

Santa is cozy in his sleigh...

...and Rudolph, too!

If people needed a breath of fresh air, it was out to the back porch to catch a view that is unbelievable!

Fabric Garland How-to

Last night after my little Addie-bug went to bed, it was time for Brayden and I to start our arts & crafts session. He was so excited and could not wait to climb up to our dining room table to help mom.

The mission to accomplish...make a colorful fabric garland that we could use to hang our Christmas cards on this year. It was a really easy project, and with a little prep work...very enjoyable for kids.

Before we got started, I gathered some inexpensive fabric and a ribbon, along with twine and scissors. The fabric was a mix of patterns and solid colors that all coordinated, and I did sneak in a fun printed ribbon for some contrasting materials.

I got a little jump start before Brayden joined in by tearing strips of fabric so he wasn't around the scissors. The strips were varying widths (1" to 2.5") but approximately 9" long. I tethered a long piece of twine to one of our dining room chairs, put a small knot in the end of the twine and we got to work. The project is a bit monotonous, but very easy once you get your groove. You simply want to tie each strip of fabric in a basic knot over and over and over and over and over again.

You can choose how long your garland ends up being, just make sure to alternate the colored strips and keep pushing them all together as you tie the knots. The tighter you cinch the fabric strips together, the fuller the garland will be.

Once you have reached the desired length for your garland, simply knot the end of the twine. If you want to add some clips or decorative safety pins to random strips of fabric to secure photos or cards, add them now and you are ready to hang it up.

I even brought it up to Maxie B's for a little show and tell....more to come!

Little Pink Houses Of Hope

Back in October, we were pleased to design a cake for the "Dancing with the Stars" fundraiser for the Little Pink Houses of Hope Organization. The group has a site that you should take a peek at, but the big thing about our cake for that night was that we created a beach house that was inspired by the purpose of the organization. LPHOH send women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer (and their families) to a beach house for a much needed vacation! There are all sorts of fun activities while on vacation, and you will see some of them reflected on the cake.

Show it off!

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, we are now on the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree...the best gift of the season...the tastiest recipe for the family gathering.......it is time to also think about all of those cards that will be showing up in your mailbox!

There are so many fun ways to display those cards and make them a part of your holiday decoration, too! Take a peek at some of these great ideas for showing off your spirit at home or in the office~

A few thick pieces of ribbon are the right background for draping your walls or doors with love. You can hot glue, pin or velcro the cards to the sash.

One of my personal favorites, a festive tree. The cards just need to have little pieces of ribbon looped on the tops so that they can dangle from the branches. This one is really inexpensive because you can take a quick stroll in the neighborhood and collect branches.....for free!

A memory board is something nice to use because when 2012 rolls around, you can just take down the cards and swap them out for photos of the family from the year past.

To keep to a traditional look, add some greenery to the staircase or even the mantle. You can attach cards with a little ribbon right to the banister, or clip them to the garland if you want.

With so much of the vintage flair worked in decorating these days, shutters are the perfect accent to any oepn space. An easy swag of twine, some paint and a few clothes pins are all you need to create this colorful backdrop.

Years ago, we used to sell these fabric garlands in the shop. It is a great way to bring any shade of color(s) to your space and an easy way to display photos or cards during the holiday season. We will have an instructional blog coming soon on how to make your own fabric garland!!!

Cake stands are amazing...what can I say?! They can be used for cake, to display food, as a floral pedestal, decoration...for anything really!

Thanksgiving decor

Through many searches for ideas to decorate the table for Thanksgiving dinner next week, I came across several great ideas. Better Homes and Gardens had lots of inspirational photos and I wanted to share some easy centerpieces with you....take a peek at the pics, and if you like the ideas just follow the site below to read more about them!

What a fun project.....pit out the pumpkins and load them up with sprigs pulled out of the yard!

Chic...You just need a little paint, some glitter and ta-dah!

This one is actually from Martha Stewart, but I couldn't resist. Vibrant colors set the mood for Thanksgiving dinner.

My favorite!! Lots of greenery and a touch of it all...classic.

Put those gourds to use....find some tall ones and fill them with bold, happy flowers!

Vintage vases and mugs are a great way to dress up a naked table....browse your cabinets to find something you haven't pulled out in a while.

Veggie delight! Core out some random vegetables and add a candle or two.....calming and peaceful~

Holiday Open House

We will have the bakery open for you to roam, get a sugar rush and see all of our staff in action! There will be cake decorating, cookies flying out of the ovens, cupcake decorating for the kiddos and so much more. If you have never attended our Holiday Open House, you are missing out.

Gone Fishing....

This week we had fondant racks full of fruit, garnishes and pieces to create this great cake for a rehearsal dinner tonight in Greensboro. Our team of decorators did an amazing job designing this Bass shaped cake from Almond Pound.

The cake is completely covered in fondant and is definitely a conversation piece. We hope the group that gets to eat it tonight agrees.....have a look at it!

The groom is an Ohio State fan....so we had to include a lure!

Well, we have been anticipating the wrath of October 1st for several months now.....and we survived! It was one of our busier weekends of the year for both weddings and normal bakery orders. In fact, it was such a busy weekend for us that we had to cut custom orders off back on Monday!

We love designing custom birthday cakes....especially for the kids! This past weekend we worked on a design for an "Olivia" themed cake for a 2nd birthday.

Last year were were able to design a Yo Gabba Gabba Cake for Destiny's 1st birthday, so it was only right that we top it this year with an "Olivia" cake....and boy did we!

It all starts with a little love for the cake drum.....a fondant blanket goes on~

There were lots of fondant pieces made to put this thing together....prepping makes all of the difference.

Benefit for Breast Cancer

We are so excited to be a part of a cake decorating competition on Friday night in Greensboro. We will be competing with two other local bakeries at the PinkOut Retro Prom which is a benefit to raise money for breast cancer.

Tickets are available for you to attend this 80's themed prom, so purchase yours today! There will be lots of fun outfits, lots of fun music............and a cake decorating competition held around 10p where attendees can cast their votes for their favorite cake design by putting money in jars beside the best cake!

Fun Party Favors!

The feature that I stumbled upon was for DIY Cupcakes In A Jar. I have had many brides ask me about how to make these for guest favors at the wedding; they are oh-so-popular.

These are fun, so easy and something you could even do with the kids as a yummy "arts & crafts" project.

Southern Delight

We were a part of a great team on September 17th at Old Salem. We worked alongside Sami Price with Just Priceless, Five Loaves Catering and the staff at Gray Auditorium. The amount of time and energy that went into every aspect of the wedding for Regina & Vince Right was amazing......and the finished product was nothing short of spectacular.

The cake was five tiers tall...a mix of Italian Cream Cake, Red Velvet and Lemon Almond Buttercream. The tree truck base was custom made for their cake and weighed a ton!!!! It was the perfect touch to add to the scene being constructed indoors.

We entered a seaside setting on Friday when we arrived at High Point Country Club to set up the groom's cake for a rehearsal dinner that night. As we walked through the front doors, it was immediately like we had stepped out on the beach...sand between our toes! There was sand on the floor, palms lining the walls and lots of places to sit down, kick back and relax!

Farewell to Wow Cow~

The shop began in the 80's as a frozen yogurt shop. Over the years, things have changed....with one addition being the introduction of Wow Cow. This yogurt gave our customers a low lactose, low sugar, low calorie and non fat option instead of our normal milk based frozen yogurt.

Unlike our other yogurt flavors that are oh so tasty and delish, the Wow Cow is not a custom concoction of Maxie B's and we feel that it is time for us to replace that with our fresh from the dairy frozen yogurt which is still low fat, but not low lactose or low sugar. We will continue to carry sorbet in the ice cream case if you have a need for something low lactose.

In an effort to support local businesses and keep true to our goal to use the freshest ingredients for our cakes and desserts, we have decided to get back to offering a range of custom made flavors in our frozen yogurt. We will soon be bringing back in flavors like Lemon Cream, Peppermint, Cheesecake, Pumpkin Pie, Apple Cinnamon, Mexican Vanilla, Keylime Pie, Coffee, Banana Pudding, Strawberry, Lemon Poppyseed, Blueberry Muffin, Red Velvet, Coconut, Peanut Butter and so many more flavors that the Triad has grown to love.......and flavors that better represent Maxie B's!

We will plan to have the Wow Cow throughout September, with all of our new flavors made in shop starting permanently in the Fall.

The time of year has come for the sun to set earlier, the leaves to turn and fall from the trees.... school has started back and it is time for us to adjust our bakery hours.

Starting Wednesday, September 14 we will have new shop hours.

Our Dessert Cafe will be open:

Monday through Thursday from 9a to 10p

Friday and Saturday from 9a to 11p

Sunday from 11a to 10p

We look forward to seeing you all in the shop for a slice of cake and a hot cup of coffee as temperatures cool and we welcome in Fall.

One of our events today was a wedding out at Childress Vineyards in Lexington, and oh was it fabulous! Despite the gorgeous weather, it was the first day that the vineyard offered carriage rides for their guests. We were able to be a part of a terrific wedding, as well as catch a glimpse of all of the new fun things Childress has to offer.

Briard Tribute

Last month we had an inquiry about the possibility of our girls designing a cake in celebration of the Briard. We worked closely with Ellen Myers to create a fabulous cake that truly honored this breed of dog & it was on show for the Briard National Banquet Dinner earlier this month.

Elizabeth Volinski stepped up and made this amazing cake which showcased the love of the breed, and held true to the "Southern Hospitality" theme for the dinner. We learned lots about this dog....and just think it is a big 'ole cuddle bug!

The cake was covered in fondant which Elizabeth then hand-painted the details. The Briard up on top of the cake was custom carved by hand and airbrushed. There was a lot of time spent on this one, and it shows!

Raffaldini Vineyards

I had the wonderful task Saturday of delivering a wedding cake to Ronda, NC. Although we have done several weddings at Raffaldini Vineyards, I have never been the one to actually go and set up a wedding cake there.

Following the direction of our navigation system, I was directed to turn left here, right there, go around the corner and find this road.....it was taking me into the middle of nowhere, it seemed. As I got to the last road to turn on, I approached a gravel road. I must admit, there was no road sign to confirm I was on the right path........and the gravel road somewhat scared me as I thought about the cake and how long this road could possibly go on. It ends up that I was able to drive 5 MPH and after almost 1 mile, I saw such a breath-taking view of the main house on the property!

It was worth the drive and the love that went into successfully getting there. The vines of grapes seemed endless, and the landscape around the villa was inviting.

It soon became a favorite venue and I could not wait to share it with everyone. Here are some shots of the vineyard, but be sure to visit their website for more shots.

Jesi's wedding at Adaumont Farm

We were looking forward to Sunday all day last week because it meant that we were able to visit Adaumont Farm in Trinity once again. This venue has become a premier spot for weddings in the Triad, and you will soon see why.

As we drove on to the property to set up for Jesi & Mike's wedding, there were endless stretches of fenced off farm land that housed horses, fields of corn and lots of tranquility! Adaumont Farm allows brides to come and relax...ceremonies by the lake and the reception in a beautiful barn. Kyle and Pattie Petty own this spot and it is truly a Southern secret!

As you approach the entrance to the barn area, you can see that the main goal here is comfort......rocking chairs, lounges and fans set the tone.

Keeping true to the country flair, a cowboy boot planter welcomes everyone right at the entrance.

Laid back and fun, Jesi and Mike had plenty of Coke to go around~

The inside of the barn guides guests to a spacious room with some cozy living quarters worked right in.....and the TVs all had Sunday's race on; who would have thought?!

The huge chandeliers hang in several places from the ceilings that are draped with fabric.

Jesi & Mike chose shades of citrus for their tables....so fun and fresh. Mason jars were the main accent on the tables along with our creations!

As you walk through the front hallway of the barn into the reception space, there are horse stalls that greet you. The stalls are absolutely amazing and have since left housing the Petty's animals, to become staged rooms for seating.

Amidst all of the guest tables, there are little nooks for people to get away and relax....the main table here is topped with sunflowers and animal skin chairs!

Now that we got our "tour" out of the way, it is time to get to work. Amanda, Robin and Emily start putting cupcakes on wooden dowels so that we can assemble the cupcakes like flowers in terra cotta pots.

We did an assortment of various shades of flowers to create a tasty centerpiece for the guest tables.

As time went on, we were really just designing a garden patch in the barn for them. So fun!

We had a guest join us for the setup. Brennan loved the flowers on all of the cupcakes and was keeping us on task, making sure that only the cupcakes with flowers made it into the pots!

She made sure that she picked her favorite one out to eat...."the pink one with the flower"!

The finished pot....a mix of Summer tones! They looked and smelled divine~

One pot went right in the middle of each table. The guests were able to pick their own flower and indulge!

This past weekend we were able to design something fun....and we wanted to share them with you!

They say that grandparents will do anything for their grandkids; it is true! A grandmother approached us to create cookies on sticks for her grandson to celebrate his performance with the Community Theatre of Greensboro's in the production of "Beauty and the Beast Jr.", which is showing through this Sunday, July 24 in downtown Greensboro.

We did an assortment of six characters that turned out amazing.

We have had lots of interest in Winnie the Pooh themed cakes lately.....and we recently designed a 1st birthday cake that was so adorable!

Elizabeth created this beautiful cake for Kyle's 1st birthday party. We have worked with his family for a while now with weddings at The Gardens at Gray Gables in Summerfield, his mom and dad's wedding cake years ago and now for their birthdays!!!

The cake is so playful and classic.....and it seems that Kyle enjoyed it, too! He kept a good grip on his cupcake while still managing to eat it~

Maxine is hardly ever in the bakery because she has much more important things to do each day like going for walks, getting baths and lounging at home.

She took some time out of her busy schedule today to join us. Her first task was to meet Margaret who drove in from Anderson, SC to get a tour of the bakery....and one thing led to another which had Maxine running the show for a bit!

She got to munch on some blueberries......

...hang out with mom...

...be a model (or not)...

...but then changes her mind when she hears, "PUPCAKES!"...

It is a hard job, but somebody has to do it!

Whimsical Wedding at Proximity

Couples come in to meet with us every day to chat about wedding cakes. We find ways to work with various color schemes, designs that may be on their invitations or even an idea of a theme to pull it all together.

I met Eric and Jennifer back in February 2011 when they first came in to start their planning for their wedding at Proximity. We were lucky enough to be able to create their wedding cake on May 14, 2011. When we first started planning ideas, we discuss the love of Tim Burton and decided that we wanted to design a cake that brought to life the Corpse Bride, but still be able to pull off a garden theme. As time went on we exchanged sketches and ended up adjusting the color scheme a bit, focusing on working in a Pool Blue. The figurines on the top of the cake eventually strayed away from the Corpse Bride idea and we arrived at the place of molding the bride and groom to reflect Jennifer and Eric!

Men...single file, please!

This past weekend we had several events that we worked on, but I would have to say that the most memorable one was a groom's cake we created for Cory's wedding rehearsal. We were able to work with Cory Evans on a cooler shaped cake that brought all of the men around for a look.

I delivered this cake to Starmount Country Club on Friday and it took a few minutes to set up. The staff there, I could tell, were looking over my shoulder to see what was going on....finally I had to leave the room for a minute. I was amazed when I came back in for a final shot of the finished product to see that the entire kitchen staff was in the process of filing out of the kitchen in a single file line to see what we had just delivered.

Olivia Allen worked on this order and she did a fabulous job!!! The cooler cake is the first we have done, but I am sure we will have lots more on order in the future.

The mother of the groom called us this morning to follow up and it seems that this was the talk of the weekend, with all of the groom's friends emailing pictures of the cake to others that were not there......and phones being pulled out on the following day at the wedding to show pictures to accompany conversation about how amazing the cake was.

We love custom cakes and were thrilled to be a part of their wedding weekend!

For the last few years, Elisa Hazel has been a part of the Maxie B's family. She is leaving us this week and we will miss her dearly. She has brought lots of comedy and happiness into our lives, and we have thoroughly enjoyed having her in our bakery world over the years. Elisa is heading to Wilkesboro to start another chapter in her story; and in true Maxie B's fashion, we had a gathering for her last night at Robin's home and captured good times with good friends!

Maxine enjoyed all of the attention that was there to offer...

Marie, Kara & Abby had the perfect laps to do the job.

Addie and Katie were all smiles....

and Robin, Shannon & Elizabeth kicked back to enjoy the evening.

Vintage Vibes...

When it comes to weddings, flowers are everywhere this year! We have met with lots of brides who want floral cascades, clusters of blossoms and even some handmade gumpaste blooms.

The more vintage style is one of my favorites....and this is one wedding cake that pulls it off effortlessly. There are over 100 handmade flowers on this five tiered work of art. Elizabeth Volinski created this cake for a wedding we worked on for Andy Lanier & Ivy Talley Lanier at Proximity Hotel on June 11th.

There was tons of time put in to making each of these one by one, but it is an amazing finish and a memorable cake for us.

The design when seen close up reminds me of a delicate applique for a dress or even a handmade lace tablecloth at my grandmother's home.....priceless!

We have a pretty good collection of cake stands in our shop, but we are always looking to add new pieces to the mix. Last weekend, we had a group of ladies in the Parlour for a baby shower and one item they brought in for their setup was a great wooden, three tiered stand. Well, we immediately fell in love with it and the shopping began!

We now have two new pieces in our collection and wanted to share them with you in case you wanted to run out and get one too!

This one is a tiered stand that would be great for mini cupcakes, truffles, petit fours and so much more!

This cake pedestal can hold just a basic cake for Sunday lunch....such a neat, farmhouse sort of look~

The weathered look is really nice...

and the foot on it has a unique shape to it.

These two stands are from Williams Sonoma and have a white washed finish that is simply rustic. They are an exclusive Williams Sonoma item and are the newest addition to their kitchen collection. Enjoy!

Doggie Cakes!

Finally....we have added Doggie Cakes to the menu!

If you want to celebrate a birthday, special occasion or just a give your pup a treat....we have something for you! We are able to bake a special recipe just for your doggie using apples, bananas, molasses, eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla, honey, carrots, whole wheat flour, baking soda, pumpkin and (sometimes) peanut butter!

Our pupcakes are a small, individually portioned treat that you can keep in the fridge or freezer for a special snack whenever you need.....but to celebrate your dog's birthday, let's do it in style with a Doggie Cake!

Our Doggie Cakes are made using a single, 5" cake layer that is topped off with a pupcake, and then we top it all off with some tinted sesame seeds for pizazz....

Your dog will love digging in to this and we can bet that they will not leave a crumb on the floor~

Chapel Hill for the afternoon~

This weekend ended up with Maxie B's cakes across the border in Anderson, SC......lots of places in Greensboro......and right down the road in Chapel Hill, NC. We had a part in a wedding that took place at Carolina Inn on the UNC campus.

Melissa Bailey and Tim McCall were married yesterday at the beautiful Carolina Inn. We have done several events there to date, but something about the weather, the flowers, the people.......everything was perfect yesterday there with those guys.

Carolina Inn provided some desserts for this gang, though they just couldn't resist having Maxie B's do their "main" cake for the reception. Things were just so simple and elegant.....the "less is more" sort of idea!

I did not get any photos of the wedding party getting ready for the big event, but I was able to capture a couple of shots of the inn while their wedding setup was taking place. Enjoy~

We are honored to be holding a Benefit Night for Ashton Miller on

Thursday, June 9 from 7 to 9p!

Until we were approached by Ashton's family and friends (better known as Ashton's Angels), we were not aware of the lack of funding and support for cancer patients between the ages of 18 and 21. This age bracket does not fit into the "childhood cancer" category, nor does it fall under "adult" patients.......these young adults need help and we must assist in the awareness of the cause.

Ashton Miller was diagnosed with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcome (ERMS), a rare form of childhood cancer in July 2007 at the age of 18. A 2006 grad of Western Guilford High School, Ashton was a talented artist, and dreamed of opening her own art gallery and living in Paris. Through the generosity of hundreds of people, she was able to visit Paris with her family in December of 2009.

She battled cancer for a little over two and half years until losing the fight in March of 2010. Ashton was a senior at The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, majoring in art and art history. Here, she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

The purpose of The Ashton Fund is to raise money for the arts, contribute to the WGHS HUGE Fund (Help Us Get to Europe), raise money for young adults with cancer and to help deserving students at both WGHS and UNC-CH pursue the field of art/art history by providing them the chance to travel to Europe.

Please come and join us on Thursday, June 9 for a great opportunity to help raise money for Ashton's Fund. We will be collecting donations and we will also donate a portions of sales to the organization. Her favorite cake, Old Fashioned Chocolate, will be available by the slice all night in honor of her and her fight.

Now Swirling...again!

Through the process of trying to refigure and fix some of our yogurt machines, we were without our delicious frozen yogurt for most of the day yesterday.

Good news.....it is back in and ready to serve! We have our machines back in business and are offering our Wow Cow Vanilla and Chocolate......as well as our French Vanilla and Chocolate from Jackson Dairy.

We are still doing the Mix-Ups where we can hand blend your own custom flavor while you wait....so have fun with it and try something new!

We get our share of non-traditional wedding cakes requests....and this weekend was the birth of one that live on for years to come.

Erin Martin & Chris McGuinn were married this past weekend in Cape Hatteras. They both share a passion for ECU and wanted that to be a part of their special day.

They had the entire cake covered in geometric patterns using black, purple and yellow fondant.

Handmade blossoms & an amazing 3D ECU topper....WOW!

The mixture of detail that was put into making the blossoms is wonderful. There are multiple layers of petals and all kinds of shapes!

W is for Wedding Weekends!

We had our first really busy wedding weekend for 2011....whew, glad we all survived! It is just the start of the season now, but we have already had one really unique cake for the books...it took the show for the weekend.

"W" is for Wedding Weekends!

We had a bride that approached us at the start of the year and asked us to create something special for her wedding at Castle McCulloch in Jamestown, NC. The theme for her wedding was a Storybook Fairytale and we picked her brain about all of the details she wanted incorporated onto her cake. After months of planning, we finally got it all together and this is what we came up with..........an open storybook with a tree growing out of the fairy tale and a hillside full of flowers guiding you up to a castle at the top.

It all started with a carved base that was an open book....."Once upon a time..."!

The starting point of all of the decoration....the tiers are being shaped to eventually become a hillside of blossoms!

We built a winding path of fondant stepping stones so the Prince can find his Princess!

The tree has set its roots....

LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of handmade buttercream flowers!

Lisa adds the final touches of "fairy dust".....

....and it is done! Ready for the party~

V is for Vintage!

"V" is for VINTAGE!

I just love these stands!!! We purchased them for a bride to use last year & have had so many people ask about them for birthday parties, weddings and baby showers. There are three to a set and are topped with clear glass. Beautiful crystals and beaded strands dangle from a scalloped, iron border....making the perfect accent to any dessert setup.

The wedding that we ordered them for originally was a unique outdoor setup that incorporated a lot of vintage elements. The cakes had a poppy theme that brought the it all to life, as well as a country flair that set the mood all around.

U is for Unbelievable!

We have featured lots of cakes over the last several months....one of our more recent ones takes the cake; literally! I worked via email and phone with Tenessia who lives in Boone, NC to create the perfect cake for her son's 1st birthday celebration. This cake and this party is unbelievable.

"U" is for UNBELIEVABLE!

Tenessia and her husband, Patrick live in Boone and we were lucky enough to work with them to design a custom birthday cake for their son, Cayman. When they were planning the party, they decided to go with a theme that Cayman's nursery had in it...PETER RABBIT.

The party was for both the kids as well as adults, with a bounce house, popcorn machine, glass bottles of Coke.

The centerpieces were fresh veggies which we also accented on the cake and balloons were the main thing! There were over 250 balloons because nothing says party like balloons!

The cake was the main centerpiece and everyone enjoyed the traditional Cream Cheese Poundcake......they wanted to know how it was possible to get a cake that looked so great, to taste great? Well, we did it!

Cayman had his own cake to play in which was a replica of his own stuffed Peter Rabbit doll.....precious!

I am sure that everyone was pooped after the party, but lots of good memories were made which makes it all worth it!

Jaxon is 9!

It seems impossible for Jaxon to already be turning 9 years old.....but he is!

Being consumed with tennis, he has to take some time for himself and what better way to celebrate his birthday than with an afternoon pedicure at Avanti Salon.

We get all kinds of questions about these cakes......here we go. Let's teach you a bit about our Topsy Turvy masterpieces!

There is so much detail needed in both the creation of the cake layers (LOTS of carving takes place) and the decoration. The whole tilted aspect of the cake is a visual play....the tiers do not actually slant and sit that crooked. There are levels carved into each cake tier that allow the layers to sit nice and sturdy.

Our decorators work on some of the decoration pieces that will go on these cakes for a whole week because we work with fondant and it needs ample time to harden prior to assembly. The cake itself is usually carved, iced and stacked within a few hours.

We prefer to stick to a more sturdy poundcake flavor when doing the Mad-Hatter cakes. The risk of filling sliding or oozing is no fun, so we just avoid that situation. Using poundcake also helps the slices but less messy and easier to cut.

We do not require customers to cover their cake in fondant, but most of the time the decoration will need to done from fondant icing. The majority of our orders have the cake iced with a cream cheese or buttercream icing......YUMMY!
